Jane Higginbottom is a sculptor and painter, currently working in carved stone and wood. She works on the theme of the fragility and chance elements of life. Her sculptures have been described as natural forms which might exist in a parallel universe.

She carves straight into the stone without a preconception of the finished piece; taking suggestions from plant or human forms. She allows the innate quality that the stone contains, help form the piece ie. she allows the stone to show what it wants to be depending on the colour, form and energy that it has.

Nature’s Systems is the theme of her current paintings which look at light and the shapes in between trees and the effects of the seasons.

Other areas of work include the community projects that she works on, such as The Heart Garden, Art in the Park and various other short term projects such as:

‘Family Treeo’ - a wood sculpture designed and made with the Radcliffe Secondary School for a courtyard in Milton Keynes Hospital.

‘Sun Mosaic’ - a mosaic made by the Kinglake Estate residents, Southwark, London.

Processes and Techniques

When stone carving Jane works mainly with hand tools to cut the stone. The work is usually on a small scale and made in the studio. She works with a variety of stones from marble to granite.

Jane studied fine art painting at Camberwell Scool of Art form 1984-7. She then moved into sculpture and studied at City and Guilds college Kennington. She now works at 330 studios, off the Old Kent Road and at Art in the Park, Burgess Park.
